Finding someone via IP lookup

There's an old friend of mine who has been sending me messages for the past week or so. He moved away when I was in 8th grade and I haven't seen him since. He wouldn't tell me where he lives now but I am really curious. He's not a stalker and neither am I. I'd just like to know what state he lives in now.

So here's my problem: he is sending me messages to my hotmail account and I can't get an IP address for him from there. Any advice?

Wait until he decides to tell you? You know what they say about curiosity and cats, right? Pretend you're the cat.

People need to respect that some people on the internet might not want to give away their information... whether you're curious or not. Finding out where he lives before he's ready to tell you might breach the fragments of trust still existing from a prior relationship. He has no idea what you're like now... maybe he's playing it safe for a time to learn more about you first. I hope you respect that and build trust the slow, old-fashioned way. If not... then, I guess I wish you good luck with your search.

I agree with jadewik

There is a way to find the IP on hotmail, can't remember how though.. You've got to play with the settings... However, since they upgraded to the live system, it might have been removed.

You know how sometimes your best friend's family decides to move to another state? Well, it was like that. You can't really relay the kind of relationship we had over the internet so I won't waste words. I'm not wanting to know what apartment he lives in just what state. I guess it's no good trying to convey feelings, but I appreciate your input. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but don't forget - that cat's got 8 lives left.

Options > Mail Display Settings > Message Headers > Full

That should show the route the message took (including ip addresses)
