I don't think the concept of new coding languages exists. As with normal language, it's a matter of evolution. Classics such as Fortran might be an exception. (The first language which you didn't nescesarily had to be a programmer to do. Even nuclear physicians could program it :D )

Besides that, I'm not really able to give you an answer since I've only wokred with c++ and java in a "hack and crack" way :P, but to my understanding there are two popular pathes. Either the program language is build on C or on Fortran and Fortran is about to go out of the loop since it hasn't been maintained since 1989. Which means that any new language (like java and php) is probably connected to C

oh, well.

I am not so familiar with others, Jonxer is, but he ain't around these days, however, I have coded with php. From what I can see, the main usage of php is to manipulate data in a database. I have used it mostly to manipulate data from mysql databases in order to make games, such as Toy Wars. Phpbb is all php. Best way to learn it, I think, is to download something, like phpbb, and just look at the code. Since you post on a phpbb forum, you should be able to see how the code relates to what happens on the forum.

Peace,

Bob
