How mesmerization works

Can anyone remember what version of DC was running back then?

At the start of the attack phase both the hero and the monster select what (hostile) actions they are going to take (with the exception of the hero selecting the preset bribe, help, trade, guess or running away options). Options include control, swindle, backstab, ietsu, berserk, and normal attack.

After both have decided what form of attack to use, "speed" is calculated for both the hero and the monster. This is documented in a post by Curulan titled "How Damage is Computed." For control (hypnosis) speed is equal to wits. Speed is used to determine who goes first. Then battle follows.

For the following discussion, hwits stands for the hero's wits and mwits stands for the monster's wits.

If both parties try to use control at the same time, then a stare down occurs. In a stare down the chance the hero wins is (hwits)/(hwits + mwits). If the hero wins then he has succeeded in mesmerizing the monster. He gets experience, all of the monster's treasure and a chance to increase wits. If the monster wins, then the hero is mesmerized and the monster either kills the hero or takes half of the hero's equipment.

In the the case where the hero is trying to control the monster, the chance to succeed is (2*hwits)/(2*hwits + mwits). Note, if the monster has the ability stubborn, then the chance for the hero to win is modified to (2*hwits)/(2*hwits + mwits + 30). If the hero succeeds then he gets experience, all of the monster's treasure and a chance to increase wits.
