You can gain charm without losing as many quest by buying drinks at the tavern. Its a little time consuming and cost some marks but you don't lose as many quest as mingling. I think it lowers your fame though. I went up 11 charm today but I lost 322 fame. I spent most of my quest in the mountains though looking fo material to build swift boots were as I normally quest in Hie Brazil, Shangela. I wonder is that why I lost so much fame? Ohh well doesn't mader I rather have higher stats than fame. I'll gain fame later once I got the equipment I want andto get back to questing regularly.

It's probably the fact your fame decays 10% per day if you simply spending all quests in the count yard, and assume mobs in the mountain reward less fame than say places like Hie Brazil, Shangela.
