UBid.com has good prices on all tech, though I'm not sure about quality, as I've never actually bought from them.

Whatever you do, don't get the 'free' norton installed when you get it unless you plan on paying for it.

If your college is like mine, you have to update your virus protection(s) before the 'log-in-thingy' will work to give you more access to the internet. And with the trial of norton, you can't update. Go figure.

Then again fixing that problem on everyone's Dell did get me lots of free food..

Dells actually aren't that bad on price. not sure if you can get one of quite that quality for under 1k though. I was looking at the option of building one with a little less than that for about 900.

Dell sucks big time, DO NOT BUY. I had a sony which was really good but make sure you get a good warranty. I got an HP now its alright. I'd say if you really got the money to spend go out and get an alienware, too bad I'm a poor college student and I can't afford one although maybe my next laptop, in a couple years will be one, if I ever decide to graduate.

Well, you can check the internet.

And usually I just dislike Dells because the laptops aren't strongly built. The clips that hold it closed and all sorts of stuff break easily with daily use. They just seam to be made more for quantity, but they work if you're careful and need something cheap I suppose.

Also you might try calling your college. They often have used laptops for sale or even lend some out for a year. That would be great for the money issue.

I have an Alienware laptop because I've been essentially saving money since I was little. For graduation, I got some money from relatives specifically for a laptop ($1200) and my parents gave me $100. Excluding all the money in my other bank account, I had $2800 in my bank account, meaning I had saved $1500. I'm a thrifty boy! :)

Never bought a laptop m'self, but I do know Sony VAIO is the best on the market. I'd also stay away from Windows Vista for a couple years... 'till they get the software up to par.

If you're looking for a deal, check e-bay. Sometimes you can find some really nice used stuff there.

eww Sony VAIO... they aren't the best... and you cant say one type of laptop is the best... every laptop model/manufacturer makes their laptops for a certain purpose... VAIO = bad for games = tbeck hate it = buy a toshiba :D

I'm an Apple fan, myself. I'd reccomend a Macbook, if you're looking for a cheap excellent laptop, though they bottom off just over $1000. If you're looking for cheap excellence, look at Mac Minis, which aren't laptops, but are very portable (the size of a large CD player, without keyboard, mouse or display; they come with the two former, and you can buy the latter for cheap). If you've gotta go PC, though, I'd reccommend an IBM (I don't know too much about them, but my roommate swears by them).
