Mah Reedin' List

Postby Carzal » December 13th, 2009, 1:10 am

'Tis the season to be out of reading material.

I work in a bookstore, so I get fairly decent deals off of books, and as a result, I read more than a little. For classes, I, of course, have to, but I mean for pleasure.

And I'm looking for suggestions. Good books are my aim, but some people thought Twilight was good, so I'll give you some pointers so that you don't make such grave mistakes.

I mostly like fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction. Essentially, adventure books. However, my favourite books tend to be things like Wicked (or rather, the sequel), Life of Pi, Watership Down and, best book of all time, Fantastic Mr. Fox (so awesome).

Any suggestions, preferably along the whole "epic fantasy/historical fiction" route?

An example of books I enjoyed are...

Shogun for historical fiction.

The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Stephen Erikson
The Dresen Files by Jim Butcher
The First Law by Joe Abercrombie
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Any Terry Pratchett book...

Ender's Game

As you can see, it's kinda heavily leaning towards epic fantasy series, so if you've got a good one, sing it out. Obviously, I've read more than this, but reccomend away. I'll tell you what I have an haven't read, and tell you my various and varying opinions on them.
I used to have a whole bunch of titles, I think. That probably makes me better than you. Maybe.

If you like epic fantasy, then all I can do is recommend George R. R. Martin. :D
My Signature

I am the freezing touch that takes life away,
I am the one whose soul is unclean.
A master of dreams, awakened to the night
I haunt the Astral and reap the mortal life

Through the moonlight's mist
I enter your soul
Which withers from purity I defile
I am the Darkness, the Night that lasts forever

@Gus:
Koontz is someone I'm looking into. He's frankenstein series is very tempting. I think I'ma get into that over christmas.
Which grisham would you recommend, if you could only recommend one?

@Zuka:
I've ready ALOT of fantasy. Perhaps a more exauhstive list is required.

Also, there's no point in reading Martin. he's never going to finish the series, since he writes one book EVERY UMPTEEN YEARS!! I mean, dammit, how long has it been since Feast for Crows came out? 2005? That's minimum four years ago, possibly FIVE. And we have no idea when it`s coming out. If it was coming out in 2010, we`d know. The earliest is therefore 2011.

stupid martin.

Anyways, other awesome fantasy that I`ve read are (including the above list) and by author rather than series.

Stephen Erikson
Jim Butcher
Joe Abercrombie
Patrick Rothfuss
Terry Pratchett

Bakker
George R.R. Martin
christopher Moore
Robert Jordan
kate Eliott
Some of the MAGIC the Gathering series
terry Brooks
Ian Esselmont
Gregory Maguire
L.E. Modesitt
Scott Lynch

I can't think of any other important/age appropriate ones. there may be. Keep the suggestions coming! I know you all read fantasy!

Please don`t suggest Goodkind, I think he's terrible.

If you haven't read Feist's Krondor novels, you should.

I've read some of them, but not all.

I read the Betrayal of Krondor, which is one of the first ones, quite a long time ago. More recently I read his trilogy about Talon of the Silver Hawk. Twas alright, but not really that impressive. Any specific books you recommend?

Add Elizabeth Moon's "The Deed of Paksenarrion" to your list. You won't regret it.

Read Magician. It's a large book, usually sold in two volumes now (Apprentice and Master). Get the Author's Preferred Edition, if you can find it.

The whole Riftwar Saga is pretty good, actually.

Boy's Life by Robert McCammon. It was recommended to me by a co-worker a couple weeks ago. I read it and loved it.

I have been reading all of R.A. Salvator's books. All the ones in reference to Drizzt the Dark Elf.

Then I am looking into some of the other Forgotten Realm books by Weiss
